Mental Health Consultations and Care Plans

Doctors @ Morningside Brisbane GP’s perform Mental Health Care Plans. A Mental Health Care Plan is a plan made by a GP to help someone manage a mental health condition and access treatment with support from psychologists, social workers, or occupational therapists.

A mental health care plan is a document your GP creates with you that outlines:

  • How you are feeling and what difficulties you are experiencing
  • Your mental health goals (e.g. improving mood, managing anxiety)
  • The treatment and support options that will help you
  • Referrals to other professionals like psychologists or counsellors

It is part of Australia’s Medicare system and is designed to make mental health care more accessible.

With a mental health care plan, you can access Medicare rebates for sessions with eligible mental health professionals, such as psychologists, social workers, or occupational therapists. This means you pay less for appointments (or sometimes nothing if bulk billed).

How it works

  • You see a GP and discuss your mental health
  • The GP assesses your needs and creates the plan with you
  • The GP gives you a referral to a mental health professional
  • You attend sessions and can return to your GP for reviews and extra referrals if needed

Under Medicare, it generally allows access to up to 10 individual psychology sessions per year (with reviews by your GP).

Important points

  • You don’t always need a diagnosis to start the plan
  • It can be updated or reviewed if your needs change
