Drivers’ Medical Assessments
Doctors @ Morningside Brisbane’s doctors perform driver’s medical assessment. A Drivers Medicals is a health assessment performed by a general practitioner (GP) to determine whether a person is medically fit to drive.
The examination may be required for:
- Obtaining or renewing certain driver’s licences.
- Commercial, heavy vehicle, taxi, or rideshare drivers.
- Older drivers who need periodic medical reviews.
- People with medical conditions that could affect driving.
During the assessment, the GP may check:
- Vision and hearing.

Who needs a Drivers Medical
A driver’s medical is usually required for people whose health, age, or type of licence could affect driving safety.
Common examples include:
- Commercial drivers such as truck, bus, taxi, and rideshare drivers.
- Older drivers (75yrs+) who are required by their state’s licensing authority to have periodic medical assessments.
- People with certain medical conditions, including:
- Diabetes Mellitus
- Epilepsy
- Heart Disease
- Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
- Vision problems
- Neurological conditions such as stroke or dementia
- People taking medications that may impair driving ability.
- Drivers who have been asked by their licensing authority to undergo a medical review after an illness, injury, or driving incident.
In Queensland, drivers are legally required to notify the licensing authority if they have a long-term medical condition that could affect their ability to drive safely. The authority may then request a medical assessment from a GP or specialist.
