ADHD – Attention Defecit Hyperactivity Disorder

Doctors @ Morningside Brisbane offers comprehensive clinical assessments for individuals who may have Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). These assessments are conducted by Dr Mehdi Samani, a qualified doctor.  The assessments are designed to evaluate symptoms, medical history, and the impact that attention, concentration, impulsivity, or hyperactivity may have on daily life, work, study, and relationships.

The assessment process involves three separate consultations, consisting of detailed discussion of current and past symptoms, review of relevant medical and mental health history, and, where appropriate, the use of standardized screening and diagnostic tools. Additional information from family members, caregivers, or previous healthcare providers may also be considered to support an accurate diagnosis.

If you are experiencing symptoms that may be consistent with ADHD, or if you would like to discuss concerns about attention, focus, organization, or impulsivity, Doctors @ Morningside can assist in determining whether a formal assessment is appropriate.

To arrange an ADHD consultation or to obtain further information about the assessment process, please contact the Doctors @ Morningside on (07) 3399 6655. Our team will be able to provide details regarding appointment availability, referral requirements, fees, and the next steps involved in the assessment process.

ADHD stands for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person pays attention, controls impulses, and regulates activity levels.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder can involve symptoms in three main areas:

  1. Inattention
    • Difficulty focusing on tasks
    • Being easily distracted
    • Forgetfulness
    • Trouble organizing activities
    • Frequently losing things
  2. Hyperactivity
    • Fidgeting or restlessness
    • Difficulty sitting still
    • Excessive talking
    • Feeling constantly “on the go”
  3. Impulsivity
    • Interrupting others
    • Acting without thinking
    • Difficulty waiting for one’s turn

There are three presentations of ADHD:

  • Predominantly inattentive (attention difficulties are most noticeable)
  • Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive
  • Combined presentation (both types of symptoms)

ADHD usually begins in childhood, but many people continue to experience symptoms as teenagers and adults. The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but genetics and differences in brain development are believed to play important roles.

Treatment may include:

  • Behavioral strategies and therapy
  • Educational or workplace accommodations
  • Medication, such as stimulant or non-stimulant treatments prescribed by a healthcare professional

Having ADHD does not mean someone is less intelligent. Many people with ADHD are highly creative, energetic, and successful, though they may need specific strategies to manage challenges with attention and organization.
