Cervical Screening

The Australian Government recommends that all women have a Cervical Screening Test at least once every five years. This has replaced the Pap Test, which was previously recommended every two years. While the procedure feels similar to the Pap Test, advances in how samples are collected and analysed have improved accuracy and early detection.

At Doctors @ Morningside Brisbane, we are committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care. If you require a Cervical Screening Test, vaccinations, or other sensitive women’s health procedures, our friendly women’s health doctors are here to support you in a comfortable and professional environment.

Why is Cervical Screening Important

Cervical screening is a highly effective preventative health test designed to detect early changes in the cells of the cervix before they develop into cervical cancer. In many cases, these cell changes occur slowly over time, which means there is a strong opportunity to identify and treat them early before they become serious.

Most cervical changes are caused by persistent infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV), a very common virus that is often spread through sexual contact. HPV infections usually do not cause symptoms, and most people are unaware they have been exposed. Because of this, cervical cell changes can develop silently without any warning signs, making regular screening essential.

The Cervical Screening Test is recommended every five years for eligible women in Australia. It is more sensitive than the older Pap Test because it detects the presence of HPV itself, rather than waiting for abnormal cell changes to develop. This allows for earlier identification of risk and more effective prevention strategies.

Early detection through screening is critical because cervical cancer is highly preventable when changes are found and managed early. If HPV or abnormal cells are detected, further monitoring, follow-up tests, or minor treatments can significantly reduce the likelihood of progression to cancer.

Another important benefit of cervical screening is reassurance. Most results are normal, and knowing your cervical health status can provide peace of mind. For those who do require follow-up, early action greatly improves outcomes and reduces the need for more complex treatment later on.

Cervical screening also forms an important part of long-term women’s health care. It encourages regular engagement with healthcare providers, which can also support broader health discussions, including contraception, menstrual health, and sexual health.

Overall, cervical screening is a simple but powerful tool that saves lives through early detection, prevention, and timely treatment.
