Iron Infusion

An iron infusion is a medical treatment where iron is given directly into a vein (intravenously) through a drip, usually in a clinic or hospital.

It is used to treat or prevent iron deficiency, especially when iron levels are very low or when oral iron tablets are not effective or cannot be tolerated.

Iron infusions are commonly used for people with:

  • Iron Deficiency Anaemia
  • Ongoing blood loss (e.g. heavy periods or gastrointestinal bleeding)
  • Poor absorption of iron from the gut
  • Side effects from iron tablets (like nausea or constipation)
  • Increased iron needs (such as during pregnancy, in some cases)

How it works:

  • A healthcare professional inserts a small needle into a vein
  • Iron is slowly delivered into the bloodstream over 15 minutes to several hours (depending on the type used)
  • The body then uses the iron to make healthy red blood cells and improve oxygen transport

Why have an iron infusion instead of taking tablets

  • Fast improvement needed
An iron infusion raises iron levels more quickly than tablets, which is useful for severe iron deficiency or significant symptoms.
  • Tablets don’t work or are not absorbed well
Some people have conditions where their body struggles to absorb iron from the gut, such as bowel disorders or after certain surgeries.
  • Side effects from tablets
Iron tablets can cause nausea, constipation, stomach pain, or diarrhoea, making them hard to tolerate.
  • Very low iron levels
If iron stores are extremely low, tablets may take too long to restore levels.
  • Ongoing blood loss
People with heavy menstrual bleeding or other sources of blood loss may need quicker replenishment.
