Toddler Health Checks

Doctors @ Morningside conduct Toddler health checks.  These are regular appointments that monitor your child’s growth, development, health, and wellbeing. They also provide an opportunity for parents to discuss any concerns about their child’s development or behaviour.

Regular toddler health checks are aimed at toddlers aged between 1–4 years of age. If you have any concerns regarding your toddler, you must bring these issues to your doctor’s attention.

When Are Toddler Health Checks Recommended?

While you can see your GP at any time, common developmental review ages include:

  • 12 months
  • 18 months
  • 2 years
  • 3 years
  • 4 years (before starting school)

In Australia, many children also receive developmental checks through their Child Health Nurse, but GPs play an important role in ongoing monitoring and can assess any concerns between these visits.

When Should You Book an Earlier GP Appointment?

It’s a good idea to book a review if you notice your toddler:

  • Is not meeting expected developmental milestones.
  • Has limited speech or isn’t responding to their name.
  • Has difficulty walking or loses previously learned skills.
  • Has concerns with hearing or vision.
  • Has ongoing feeding, sleeping, or behavioural difficulties.
  • Has poor growth or weight gain.
  • Has recurrent illnesses or persistent health concerns.

Regular toddler health checks help identify any concerns early so that, if needed, your GP can arrange further assessment or refer your child to the appropriate specialists or allied health professionals.

The health check can include:-

  • Measuring height, weight, and head circumference (when appropriate)
  • Plotting growth on growth charts
  • General physical examination (heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, eyes, skin)
  • Reviewing nutrition and eating habits
